Vestibular Rehabilitation

Vestibular Rehabilitation is a specific approach of Physical Therapy aimed at decreasing dizziness, vision changes and imbalance in patients. Management of patients with vestibular disorders is a complex condition. Patients who have acute or chronic vestibular and/or balance dysfunction secondary to complications associated with such disease processes as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, labyrinthitis, vestibular neuritis, Meniere's syndrome, perilymph fistula, as well as any other disease process that affects the vestibular system. At Alliance Physical Therapy not only can we help distinguish which component of the balance system is affected but also help each patient address their symptoms through canalith re-positioning maneuvers, VOR stabilization exercises and addressing underlying musculoskeletal impairments.
Common Causes of Dizziness:
Peripheral Disorders - treated with canalith re-positioning or compensatory training
1. BPPV - affects 1/10 in geriatric population
2. Vestibular Neuritis
3. Meniere's disease
4. Labyrinthitis
Central Disorders - often treated with compensatory training
1. Multiple Sclerosis
2. Acoustic Neuroma - treated after resection
3. Superior Canal Dehiscence - often treated after plugging procedure
4. CVA
